Register your business name in just two weeks from the comfort of your home.

No waiting for 21 to 35 days

You get your name availability search result in less than 24 hour. Read this post to learn how.

Yes you heard it right.  I registered my business name in two weeks without a third party and from the comfort of my home. In this post, I’ll share with you how I did it.

I had read a manual about business name registration prior to the time I wanted to register my business name. But this manual was published over five years ago, so it’s not completely up to date but it was of help. In addition to that I made research online and with all these I learnt of the requirements.

Next, I went to their website to see if the registration could be done online but all I could see was a printable PDF form which could not be filled online. You have to print it out and then fill it manually.

Then I headed to their Alausa office. From the manual I read, I saw two addresses, I went to he first address but was told the building was empty. Then I went to the second office, Plot 7 Otunba Jobi Fele Way, Alausa, Ikeja.  I met the front desk office who told me I had to go online to do it. I told him I had checked their website and that it wasn’t possible to register online. Then he told me about their new website and pointed to where it was pasted. I noted the website and a few other impotent details.

How to do name availability search

Register and go to your mail box to confirm your registration.

Then log in, you will be requires to change your password at this time.

The first thing you will have to do is to download the user guide. This will teach you everything you need to do.

Proceed to name search. Make sure you have a unique name in mind.

Enter the business name you would like to register in the search box. In the first box enter your preferred business name. For option 2 enter another business name just in case the first is not available. Fill in all the required information in step 2 and 3, when you are done you will be prompted to make payment of N500. In less than 24 hours, the result will be out. Log in to check the status of your name search. Click on reservation history, If it is approved you will see it display there. If it is not you will see disapprove there. If it is pending or you see any other thing other than approved or disapproved, click on action and you will see a drop down menu. Select what is applicable to your situation and wait for 10 to 15 minutes, then the true status of your name search will be known.

What happens if the name is unavailable or disapproved? You’ve just wasted N500. And for as many times as the name you choose is not accepted you start over again and make another payment, N500 each time. So you see, it’s easy to spend N2000 to 5000 just for name availability. I spent N1000 on that. This is why you have to make sure that the name you choose is unique and clear. If it is approved, click on action and select download from the drop down menu. Keep this document safe.

If the name is denied, download the denial notice to learn the reason. If it approved, you’ll download two documents- 1. Approval notice 2. Payment receipt.

Application for Business Name registration

Having got an approved business name, it’s now time apply for business name registration. Proceed as follows:

Click on name registration

Fill in all the required information

Make payment of N10,000 with your credit or debit card

Wait for 10 t0 24 hours

Log in to check the status

If approved download the approval document and payment receipt from the drop down menu that appears when you click action. Now you’re done online. The rest will be done off line.

How to submit your business name registration application form

Your next step is to visit CAC and submit your registration documents. You need to take with you all the documents you downloaded. Namely:

  1. The approval notice of Business name search
  2. The payment receipt of business name charge
  3. Payment receipt of N10 000 for business name registration.
  4. Your duly completed form. 2 pages)
  5. Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR).

The 5th one will be sent to your mail box and is very important. Without it, nothing.

The above image is the 5th one I talked about. It is your receipt of N10 000 payment from Remita. Now that you have all the documents you need, sign the application form, attach two passports and make two photocopies of each of the papers. Then go to CAC and submit them. You are done. You will be told to return in two weeks. I was told a payment of N250 will be made to skybank but nothing of that was requested of me.

Now you can register your business name without hiring a lawyer
